Beginning Metal Guitar - Interlude to Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer
Interlude to "Seasons in the Abyss"

Techniques in this lesson: Picking across the fretboard. Some fretting changes.

The Four Seasons

Just like we did with the intro to One, we are going to look at this interlude in sections or pieces. There are fewer fretting hand changes in this riff and more flowing picking. If you cant read this or don't recall how to read tab, check out the terms and tablature page.

Something to consider after looking at the tablature are that our 2nd finger does not move throughout this whole riff. It can stay firmly planted on the 3rd string, 3rd fret. The only finger that does move is our 1st. On closer inspection we can see that our first finger movement is in a square shape as shown below.

Also if we break this into four pieces we can see the first fretting position is played twice, then the second fretting position is played once sharing the exact same picking pattern. The final two pieces are just runs down the strings with the 1st finger moving from the 3rd to the 2nd fret on the 5th string.

Piece 1 - The opener

Getting this piece down will get us half way through the riff. Begin by placing your 1st finger on the 4th string 2nd fret and your 2nd finger on the 3rd string 3rd fret. Remember our 2nd (middle) finger does not move.

Next since our fretting hand is locked in, pick the strings as follows; 4,3,2,1,2,3,4,3.
It should sound like this mp3.

This is repeated once to conclude the first half of the lick. Take a few minutes to practice this piece and memorize the picking pattern. Remember to play as slow as is necessary to play this piece correctly. The picking is done in a flowing pattern once you get the feel of it. The speed it is played on the album is fairly fast. When picked twice and sped up, it should sound similar to this mp3.

Piece 2 - Same picking as piece 1
