Cynic
Ask anyone who is into progressive metal who helped define the genre and Cynic is likely to be on the short list. To date they have only released a single album (Focus) however it was so groundbreaking and unique it gained the band a solid following.

Originally formed in 1987 by Sean Reinert and Paul Masvidal the band recorded four demos between then and 1990 with Mark Van Erp and later Tony Choy on bass. They also added Jason Gobel to the lineup as the second guitar player.

In 1991 Cynic was signed by Roadrunner Records however it would not be the year of Cynic yet. Paul and Sean had performed on the Death album Human and had obligations to play on the European leg of the tour which kept them from recording their own masterpiece.

1992 saw the departure of Tony Choy who ended up in the band Atheist. At this point they were aiming to start tracking on Focus in August but unfortunately a hurricane that swept through Florida destroyed Jasons home and their practice studio.

Finally in 1993 after the obligations and acts of god were out of the way, the studio lineup settled in with Sean Malone playing bass and Tony Teegarden providing the growling vocals while Paul sang the higher harmony parts. The product of this gathering was an album that showcases not only the talents of each musician, but also in depth understanding of overall composition. The album bridged the gap between death metal and progressive metal in a way that still has not been bested to this day.

Fans have been anxiously awaiting a new Cynic recording for over a decade however it appears we will not be waiting much longer. Cynic reunited and re-entered the studio in Jan of 2008 to begin working on what hopefully proves to be another masterpiece. In a post on Sean Malones blog dated June 12, 2008 the bass and stick work is all done and the new album is "currently being mixed".
